Él sabe que tiene para largo rato,
la sentencia en fija lo va a hacer sonar,
y así -entre cabrero, sumiso y amargo-
la luz de la aurora lo va a saludar.
Quisiera que alguno pudiera escucharlo
con esa elocuencia que las penas dan,
y ver si es humano querer condenarlo
por haber robado... ¡un cacho de pan!
Sus hijos no lloran por llorar,
ni piden masitas, ni chiches, ni dulces... ¡Señor!
Sus hijos se mueren de frío
y lloran, habrientos de pan…
La abuela se queja de dolor,
doliente reproche que hiere su hombría.
También su mujer, en una mirada
toda la tragedia le ha dado a entender.
¿Trabajar?... ¿A dónde?... Extender la mano
pididendo al que pasa limosna, ¿por qué?
Recibir la afrenta de un ¡perdone, hermano!
Él, que es fuerte y tiene valor y altivez.
Se durmieron todos, cachó la barreta,
se puso la gorra dispuesto a robar…
¡Un vidrio, unos gritos! ¡Carreras!... ¡Auxilio!...
Un hombre que llora y un cacho de pan...

He knows that it will be for a long time,
the determinate sentence will make him a failure,
and like this -between bad-tempered, submissive and bitter-
the light of dawn will greet him.
He would like that someone could hear him
with that eloquence that sorrows give,
and to see if it’s humane to want to condemn him for having stolen... a piece of bread!
His children don’t cry for crying’s sake
nor ask for cookies, nor baby food nor sweets.. Lord!
His children are dying of cold
and cry, starving for bread...
The grandmother complains of pain,
grieving reproach that hurts his manhood.
Also his wife, with a look
all the tragedy made him understand.
To work? Where? To extend the hand
begging for spare change, why?
To receive the affront of a “sorry, brother!”
He, who is strong and has courage and pride.
Everyone went to sleep, he took the crowbar,
put on the cap ready to rob...
A glass, some screaming! Running! Help!
A man who cries and a piece of bread...
